Overview

CUET (Common University Entrance Test) has revolutionised university admissions in India. Conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency), CUET has replaced the traditional 12th board percentage-based admission system at 250+ universities across India. This means a student scoring 95% in 12th boards but performing poorly in CUET may not get admission, while a student with 75% in boards but a strong CUET score can get into a top university.

For Arts stream students, CUET is both an opportunity and a necessity. It's an opportunity because it levels the playing field — you compete based on a standardised national exam rather than varying board percentages. It's a necessity because top universities like Delhi University, JNU, BHU, and Jamia Millia now mandate CUET scores for admission. This guide covers complete eligibility, subjects, and preparation guidance for Arts students.

CUET UG Eligibility (For BA Admission)

Educational Qualification:

  • 12th pass (or equivalent) from any recognised board (CBSE, ICSE, State Board, NIOS, International Boards).
  • Any stream: Arts, Science, Commerce — all eligible. To study BA (Hons) in a specific subject, you typically need that subject (or related subject) in 12th. Check university-specific requirements.
  • Minimum marks: University-specific. Some universities require 50% in 12th, others have no minimum percentage requirement. CUET itself has no minimum percentage for appearing.
  • Appearing candidates: Students appearing in 12th board exams can also apply for CUET.

  • Timeline: 3-5 months of preparation is sufficient if you have strong fundamentals from 11th-12th. Focus 60% time on domain subjects and 40% on language + general test.

Conclusion

CUET has become the mandatory gateway to India's best universities for Arts students. Whether you're seeking BA admission (CUET UG) after 12th or MA admission (CUET PG) after graduation, CUET scores are now essential for Delhi University, JNU, BHU, Jamia, and 250+ other universities. For Arts stream students, the good news is that CUET is highly manageable — domain subjects test NCERT-level knowledge, the language section tests basic comprehension skills, and the general test covers standard GK and reasoning. With 3-5 months of structured preparation using NCERTs and mock tests, Arts students can score competitively and secure admission to India's top universities. CUET democratises admissions — it rewards preparation and aptitude over board percentage, giving every Arts student a fair chance.
